Natural Remedies for Periodontal Disease

November 23, 2011 Posted by admin

Periodontal disease tops the list of causes of adult tooth loss.  About 85% percent of the adult population in the US alone has suffered gum infection every year.  Periodontal disease is caused by a prolonged and untreated inflammation of the gums due to bacterial infection.  If not treated right away, periodontal disease can lead to a host of other dental and medical complications including heart failure and stroke.  Unfortunately, the cost of treating periodontal disease can be especially steep and not a lot of people can afford it.  But then, there are safer, non-invasive and less expensive alternatives to periodontal disease treatment.

Herbal remedies can help treat periodontal disease and prevent it from recurring.  And since they are all-natural, there is less chance of overdose as well as other side effects.  However, consulting a dentist before administering these remedies is a must as they will be able to assess the severity of your gum infection.  Remember that while these remedies can help reverse the early signs of periodontal disease, they may not suffice when treating advanced cases of periodontal diseases.  However, you can still use these treatments to help aid the healing process after surgically treating the devastating effects of periodontal disease.

Aloe vera is one of the most well-known cures for the early stages of periodontitis.  It has antiseptic properties which could aid in combating the infection as well as help in the repair of damaged gum tissues.  You can rub a small amount of natural aloe vera gel from the plant or you can purchase aloe vera-based toothpaste to help treat the early signs of periodontal disease as well as aid in post-dental operation healing.  Other herbal treatments include clove oil and tea-tree oil as both have potent antiseptic properties which could heal the infection and aid in the repair of damaged tissues.

Green tea, too, can aid in the healing process of periodontal disease.  It also has antiseptic properties which could fight off infection as well as stop the bleeding. It also prevents starch from converting to sugar which is detrimental to the health of your teeth and gums.   You can substitute your mouthwash with warm green tea to help aid in post-dental operation recovery as well as treatment and reversal of early signs of gum disease.  In addition, a solution of a few drops of witch hazel tincture and warm water can also aide in the reversal of the periodontal disease.
